Key dates

Entry and shortlisting

  • Entries were submitted on 24 April 2018 - teams shared a 2-minute YouTube-type video as their first response 
  • On 8 May 2018 the shortlist of 8 teams was announced and the non-shortlisted teams were provided with feedback on their submissions

Stage 2 - for shortlisted teams

  • On 24 May the finalist teams were taken on a tour of O.R. Tambo International Airport to better understand the process around air travel
  • 2 July 2018 – sprint-stage opening day took place at Tshimologong with the finalists having expert advice on presentation skills and final submission planning
  • 1-15 July 2018 - sprint stage for teams to work on their ideas and proposals.  Teams will have access to Tshimologong precinct during sprint week to meet with team members and to finalise their report and presentation.
  • 12 midday SAST on 16 July 2018 – teams must submit their competition report and presentations to itumeleng@tshimologong.joburg; no late submissions will be accepted
  • 19 July 2018 - team presentations and final judging; team members must be available to present to the judges at Tshimologong Precinct
  • 20 July 2018 – Teams present on their concept and award ceremony at WITS University at 11am

Judging

Judges will be representatives of SITA, Wits and Tshimologong. The decision of the judges is to be based on majority vote; in the event that the panel of judges numbers four in total, the Chair shall have the casting vote.

The award will be made to the team that demonstrates the best understanding of the issue and which proposes the most innovative and relevant response.

Intellectual Property Rights

All creations, inventions and outputs of each team’s work will be, and will remain the intellectual property of the respective team.

​Communications

​Wits and SITA shall share what they write about the award, entries and winning team and will publish what they write using Wits and SITA communication channels.

By participating in the Innovation Award, you are giving your permission for your photograph, name and information relevant to the Innovation Award to be used to communicate about the initiative.
